Pop quiz: Open your purse and count the items you have inside.
How’s it looking?
We tend to carry around a lot more than we need!
As part of a conscious effort to streamline and simplify my life, I’ve decided to choose the items in my purse intentionally, and to only carry what I truly need.
Each evening, I remove receipts from purchases I’ve made, or business cards I’ve been given. I think about what extra items, if any, I’ll need to have with me the next day and add them to my purse.
Having a clean and tidy purse brings me a sense of order and sophistication and is just one of those “little things” that helps me feel prepared each day.
Here’s what I keep on hand in my purse, and why:
These days, a smart phone takes the place of a notepad, an address and phone book, and coupons. It’s truly a space saver! Be selective about the apps you put on your phone, then let them literally take the load off!
Not 12 pens and a set of markers. Choose one pen that sparks joy when you use it. I currently have one that was a souvenir from our church’s couples retreat earlier this year–it’s red, shiny, and writes very smoothly! It doesn’t have to be expensive, but make it special!
Choose a slim lined wallet that holds your essentials, such as your driver’s license, debit and/or credit card, and cash. If you have more than one wallet or smaller bag inside of your purse, consider matching or coordinating them. Try not to carry loose change—it’s heavy!
Choose one good quality, feminine scented hand lotion.
The keys you carry with you from day to day should be only those you use day to day. Too many keys and extra key chains are heavy and bulky. Choose a key chain that makes you happy when you look at it! Your keys will be in your hand several times each day, so you might as well have them looking cute!
Insulin pump and diabetes supplies.
I have type 1 diabetes, and that means putting a little thought into having what I need every time I leave the house. I have an Omnipod insulin pump which is wireless and I carry it in my purse wherever I go. I chose a pink cover to jazz it up. If you (or your kids) have any health concerns, be mindful of packing what you need for the day, to reduce anxiety when you realize you need something while you are away from home.
It’s probably not necessary to take your entire makeup bag along with you every day. One or two touch-up items should do it!
I carry a regular barber’s comb rather than a brush, to save space and weight.
Finally, the purse itself.
Currently, I’m toting a polka dot Kate Spade number, which I was thoughtfully gifted by my parents last Christmas. I love it! It’s very versatile, great quality, and the perfect size for what I need right now!
In the past, I’ve chosen different bags and clutches that have caught my eye, in a variety of price ranges (I have no problem rocking a $5.00 bag if it fits my needs!) and sizes. Some have been new and some have been secondhand. The price and the brand absolutely do not matter, but the size and the quality do!
One final thought…
Once you’ve retired a purse for a season, be realistic about if you’ll reintroduce it into your wardrobe in the future. If not, pass it along to a friend, rather than storing it in your closet! Remember: More stuff = more to keep clean and organized!
