A few months ago, I started a series called, “Let Me Count the Ways,” in which I choose one single piece of clothing and style it 10 different ways. You can see how versatile a floral pencil skirt is here!
Besides having so much fun creating the looks, I started to realize that using one piece of clothing many ways is not only novel, but truly a way to be a good steward of the items in my closet. Being a frugal fashionista is just plain smart!
In fact, you can use the ideas you read about in this and other related “Let Me Count the Ways” posts to make your capsule wardrobe more interesting. (What’s a capsule wardrobe? Read about it here and here!)
For this rendition, I selected a Kasper brand knee-length black dress, which I’d bought secondhand a few years ago. A well fitting little black dress, or LBD is a closet staple! I probably paid less than $20 for it, and I remember having it altered just a bit around the torso. I can’t say enough about the value of tailoring your clothes! Well-fitting clothing is crucial to feeling confident whether you’re playing with your kids in the park, or attending a board meeting!
Here, you can see the detail on the shoulder and cap sleeve:
Next, I shopped my own closet to create 10 versatile looks that can be worn through the 4 seasons.
I also will make mention of a captivating documentary on Netflix called, “Iris,” about the influence Iris Apfel has had not only on fashion in New York City, but on developing a personal style. In it, she demonstrates how to layer statement necklaces and bracelets in an intentional way. If you haven’t already seen it, I’d encourage you to check it out!
Look #1: LBD with a lightweight scarf used as a wrap, accessorized with a rhinestone statement necklace (similar), neutral patent heels, a faux snakeskin clutch and an infinity bracelet.
Look #2: LBD layered over a long sleeved black top, with a blanket scarf (similar), black open toe booties, bangles and a polka dot purse.
Look #3: LBD layered under a striped sweater with layered pink statement necklaces (similar), two toned patent heels, and a pink purse (similar).
Look #4: LBD with a red cardigan, layered red statement necklaces (similar), grey flower belt, black open toe booties (similar), and a polka dot purse.
Look #5: LBD with a floral kimono (similar), rose gold statement necklace, black wedge sandals (similar), infinity bracelet and a neutral clutch.
Look #6: LBD with a green cardigan (similar), layered gold necklaces, neutral patent heels (similar), and a faux snakeskin clutch.
Look #7: LBD with a print scarf, black slip extender, black wedge sandals, bangles, and a pink purse. What’s a slip extender? It’s basically a regular slip with a thick border of lace or other material at the hem designed to intentionally stick out from under your skirt or dress. Use this link to check out the one ModCloth sells, but they are available at many retailers. It can add some length or simply just some visual interest!
Look #8: LBD with an orange, purple and navy color block scarf (similar), navy clutch (similar), neutral wedge sandals, and monogrammed bracelets. Hold the phone. Can you wear black and navy together? YES! Do it intentionally and you’ll look super chic! In this case, navy becomes an accent color instead of a neutral.
Look #9: LBD with a chambray shirt (similar), bronze necklace, sequined tote bag and faux snakeskin flat sandals.
Look #10: LBD with a feminine detail gray cardigan, nautical scarf (similar), navy clutch, patent burgundy flats (similar), and bangles.
I hope this post has given you just a bit of inspiration to stretch your wardrobe and make it work for you!
