How many times have you gone to your closet to get dressed and thought, “I don’t have anything to wear?”
It’s cliché, but we’ve all been there!
We logically know we have clothing to wear and are thankful for it, but nothing seems jump out at us.
Before I go any further, I must disclose that I entertain a combination of methods of curating my wardrobe. I love learning about minimalism, capsule wardrobes, mixing and matching what’s already in my closet, second-hand shopping, and wardrobe swap parties! I’ve taken what works for me from each of these schools of thought, but I’m not a purist or loyal to just one.
Today, I want to demonstrate what “shopping your closet” means to me and how it can produce contentment in almost no time!
The basic premise of shopping your closet is to take stock of what you already own and use those items to create looks you feel confident in, without spending a dime, or feeling frustrated when you’re picking out your clothes.
Here are some tips to get started:
Take time to discard or set aside items in your closet that don’t fit now, don’t flatter now, or you don’t find yourself reaching for. Think current, yet classic!
Categorize your clothing by type (dresses, skirts, tops, pants, etc.). Then further categorize by color. This makes your closet and dresser mirror a clothing display at a store, which can be inspiring!
Think creatively when it comes to creating outfits. Remember that a well-made garment should easily translate from look to look. This stretches your dollar and gives you fashionista points!
Here is some inspiration. I’ve created these looks from items I’ve had in my closet for a long time. (Scroll to the end of this post to view links to similar pieces, but remember, shop your closet first!)

The moral of this post is that you probably have a closet full of chic looks without even realizing it! By taking a bit of time to organize your clothes and try out different combinations of your pieces, you can find contentment in what you already have!
